Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
