This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
